ANTARCTICA II

So, here you will have the second installment of our Antarctica photos. As I think you will see, they are more amazing than the first. It is such an incredible place that these photos can really do no justice to the beauty that we saw. I actually have run out adjectives (as you will see with the captions) to describe this "out of earth" experience.......

Bueno, pues aquí va la segunda entrega de nuestras fotos de Antártida. Como veréis, son más increibles e impresionantes que las anteriores. La mayoría de estas fotos las sacamos un día por la tarde en un paseo de un par de horas en zodiacs. No desembarcamos, solo estuvimos dando vueltas por una especie de inmensa bahía natural. Como dice Laura, nos hemos quedado sin adjetivos para describir esto. Para mí, este par de horas fueron las más impresionantes de mi vida, en lo que a naturaleza se refiere. Y no exagero. Recuerdo que al volver al barco, le dije a otro de los pasajeros: "Si, si, muy bonito. Y ahora, cómo lo contamos?". Pues eso, disfrutad las fotos y compartid un poco con nosotros esta experiencia "extraterrestre"...

We had to sterlize our boots before and after landing on Antarctica to prevent spreading foreign bodies.
Teníamos que esterilizar las botas antes y después de los desembarcos en Antártida, para evitar propagar cuerpos extraños.

Yo no sé quién es ese Waldo, pero debe ser algo así como jugar al escondite. ¿Dónde estamos Laura y yo?

The pieces of ice that you see infront of our boat just minutes before was one piece. Just after our boat crossed the straight between the ice on the left of the screen and the icberg in fron of our boat, it broke and cracked and thundered and rolled and fianlly stopped and is what you see now. It was an amazing display of nature's power and beauty.
Los trozos de hielo que veis delante del barco eran una sola pieza minutos antes de sacar la foto. Eso, un iceberg. Justo después de pasar entre éste y el que se ve a la izquierda, se rompió varias veces en varios trozos, hasta quedar como se ve ahora. Increible muestra del poder y la belleza de la naturaleza.

The weather started to turn. The sky turned dark and the wind picked up. We had to retturn to the Zodiac boats (shown here) ASAP in order to make it to our large boat before the storm came. We did make it but it was after battling huge waves in these boats. They are sturdy, but being out there in the rough sea, getting drenched with zero degree salt water, you realize that you are at the sea's complete mercy.
El tiempo empezaba a cambiar. El cielo se puso negro y arreció el viento. Tuvimos que volver a las zodiac corriendo para poder volver al barco antes de que llegara la tormenta. Y lo conseguimos, pero no sin tener que pelear y "negociar" olas bastante considerables. Las zodiac son resistentes y bastante seguras, pero estando allí en el medio de la mar cabreada, recibiendo olas de agua salada a cero grados encima de ti, te das cuenta de lo pequeñito que eres y de que estás completamente a merced de la mar.

Toño was actually able to get a pic of the whale's tail. It was a humpback.
No fue fácil con una camara normalita, pero le "pillé" la cola a la ballena. Era una ballena jorobada.

The rest of these photos you will see are taken from the Zodiac boats. We never put foot on the land in this excursion but it was absolutely amazing. I don't think I have, personally, been surrounded by so much natural beauty at one time. It is my definition of breathtaking.
El resto de estas fotos están sacadas desde las zodiac durante ese par de horas increible. "Im-presionante"!! Como decía antes,el sitio más de lo más en el que yo he estado.

The blue of the iceberg under the water was like an island in the Caribbean.
El azul del iceberg debajo del agua era como en las islas del Caribe, dicen.

Straight wall of ice and snow. You could hear things craking and falling once in a while.
Muro vertical de hielo y nieve. De vez en cuando se oia resquebrajarse y caer cositas al agua.

These seals were swimming and playing around the iceberg and trying to find a way to get up and bask in the sun!
Estas focas estaban nadando y jugando (y quizá pescando) alrededor de un iceberg, quizá buscando como subirse a él a tomar el sol un ratito.

On our way to visit this seal, we could see a Minke whale swimming around just underneath our boat. Incredible.
Cuando nos estábamos acercando a esta Foca Leopardo, vimos una ballena Minke nadando alrededor de nuestra zodiac. Increible.

She was just waking up from a nap. We were able to get within 6 feet of her.
Se estaba despertando de una siesta. Nos pudimos acercar hasta casi tocar el hielo con la zodiac, o sea, a un par de metros.
